School is in session! An exciting time for freshman and upper class-men alike. One of the things that may not be a topic that is frequently thought of, is the underground infrastructure and building history of some of the most attended colleges. Understandably so, but in many cases there is a rich historical background to consider.
Reed College is a private liberal arts college located in southeast Portland. Founded in 1908, Reed is a residential college with a campus located in Portland’s East Moreland neighborhood. The Reed College campus was established on a southeast Portland tract of land known in 1910 as Crystal Springs Farm, a part of the Ladd Estate, formed in the 1870s from original land claims. The college’s grounds include 116 acres of contiguous land, including a wooded wetland known as Reed Canyon. Reed College has developed a plan to restore the canyon and lake to a self-sustaining, ecologically balanced condition over a period of five years. Reed College has been an integral part of a restoration project to keep the water clean and has also championed preservation of the environment, working closely with the Johnson Creek Watershed Council.
